About Us

Established in 1886, we are the world's leading professional body for brewers, distillers and allied professionals. This was recognised by the grant of the Royal Charter in 2023, which has led to us transitioning to the Chartered Institute of Brewers and Distillers (CIBD) on 1st January 2025. As the CIBD, we are committed to building on the legacy of the institute and to make our products and services more relevant to the drinks industry.

Our strength lies in our international community spread across 90 countries and the high standards of our beverage qualifications which are seen as the benchmark by industry leaders. With the Chartership, we will showcase the professional standards and quality maintained by our members and qualification candidates.

Founded in 1886 as the Laboratory Club with the aim to improve the technical and scientific education and to make brewing more accessible, we’ve long championed technical education within the drinks industry. Our forward looking qualifications, continuous professional learning and insights are valued by employers and industry leaders. Since we began professional qualifications in the 1950s, we have qualified over 100,000 brewers and distillers across the globe. Every year, more than 4000 professionals from all corners of the world are taking our qualifications to progress in their careers and to create the best and high quality products consistently.

The CIBD is more than just a learning and technical qualification provider. We are a Membership organisation committed to bringing professionals together to share knowledge and expertise. With more than 3000 members across the world, we operate at local level with our Sections and create a global network and community of professionals with the aim to learn from best practices and create long lasting professional relationships.
